Exterior Railing

The customer wanted an exterior railing based on the interior railing, but using pre-fabricated square panels as an alternative to cables. The customers wanted to relax on their deck and look toward the mountains without the railing impeding their view. Additionally, this couple also wanted a gate on their deck that could be used for a slide in the future.

I tried to keep similarities between the outside and inside railings, while using a different design for the panels. The design needed to feel heavy while also airy enough to allow the customers to see through the railing while enjoying their deck. One can see the similarities in the overall spacing design.

The gate sneaks into the design quite well. We kept the same attention to design with the gate as we did with the other panels on the railing. Additionally, we fabricated a handmade handle for the latch. The gate is a pleasure to operate.

Similar to the interior railing, the customer wanted an unfinished look. The railing went unfinished for a winter and allowed to rust. In this summer, the rust was locked in by using a specific clear coat capable of this task.

The handrail is cedar coated with a high quality fencing and deck product.
